August 19th Picks/lookback on day

August 18th pick results

D.C. United- Won (draw 1-1)

Record for day- 1-0
Overall- 26-3

Surprised D.C. struggled so much. At one point I was actually pulling for them to lose to see the leaderboard go down. It was a win-win to me.

Tomorrow I have 2 or 3 picks. It seems like SM is really trying to throw some tougher picks lately. These are the best I could find. I may stay away today.

The Picks...

Pick #1 Wolfsburg

This pick didn't seem increadibly good to me at first. Borussia beat Bayern, who beat Wolfsburg. However, after doing a bit of research on this game, Borussia has a couple key players out and there are a lot of decent streaks being risked on this game. Also a fact, no game between these teams have ever ended without a goal. I think a draw is probably the most likely scenario.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Lucien Favre will have to do without the services of first-choice striker Igor de Camargo and defender Martin Stranzl who have picked up injuries. Roel Brouwers is serving a suspension after picking up a red card in last weekend's game against Stuttgart, and is set to miss the match on Friday.

Wolfsburg

Felix Magath will have a nearly full squad on hand, with only long-term absentees Arne Friedrich and Thomas Kahlenberg, as well as the dropped Diego, unavailable from his first-team squad. Ja-Cheol Koo is also injured after picking a knock in the match against Bayern Munich last Saturday and will join new signing Thomas Hitzlsperger on the sidelines

Pick #2 Texas Rangers-

I really hate picking Texas 4 of the last 5 days, but so far last night was my most concerned day to pick them. The Rangers (72-52, 33-29 away) will travel tomorrow to face the White Socks (61-61, 27-34 home). The Rangers have looked pretty well on the road, the White Socks havn't looked to great at home. Texas will start Matt Harrison (3.19 ERA, 10-8, 95 strikeouts, 1.27 WHIP) on the mound, who has looked pretty well this season. Chicago will start Jake Peavy (4.69 ERA, 5-5, 69 strikeouts, 1.23 WHIP). The Rangers recently became #1 in batting average in the MLB surpassing Boston. Next to that, they rank 3rd in runs, 4th on base and 2nd in slugging %. The White Socks are pretty average in batting, ranking 19th in runs, 15th batting average, 13th on base and 19th in slugging %. This isn't a lock but it is a decent pick.

More soon... stay tuned

August 18th Picks/Lookback on day

August 18th Pick Results

Vindbjart Result- Won 3-2
Dinamo Result- Won 4-1

2-0 for day
Possible pick Results

Detroit Tigers Result- Loss 6-5
Atlanta Braves Result- Loss 7-5
Brazil Result-               Won 2-0
Texas Rangers Result- Won 4-3

I think I am just going to revert back to my original plans of picking 2-4 quality picks. That's what made this blog so successful in the first place. Also according to a poll I took earlier that is what you guys wanted. I dont think this experiment went that great.

Well back to safer things....

The Picks...

Pick #1 DC United-

This is a pretty good pick. DC United has the draw option and look significantly better. DC United is 7-9-6 scoring 30 points and keeping their goal difference to 0. Chicago is 2-14-7 scoring 20 goals and having a -7 goal difference. The only thing I can see Chicago having an advantage in is playing at home. If DC United's team is healthy, there is a good chance they could pull out a win.

Thats actually all today. I cant really find anything else increadibly good.

August 17th picks/lookback on day

August 16 results

Atlanta Braves Result- Won 2-1
St. Louis Cardinals Result- Loss 5-4
Texas Rangers Result- Won 7-3

Picks correct for day 2-1. Overall pick record 23-3

Atlanta Braves- Im sorry I never got an overview up on this game. I was busier than I thought I would be today, but it turned out to be a pretty good pick. I went back and forth on this game and the Cardinals and finally just picked the Cardinals. Huge mistake.

St. Louis Cardinals- I new this would be close. I thought about not putting it up or put it up as a "possible pick" switched with Atlanta, but I didn't want to only post 1 pick. St. Louis had some good opportunities to take this game. Including taking a 1 point lead going into the bottom of the 9th inning. St. Louis played every bit as good as Pittsburg, but Pittsburg was  able to edge this one out and drag the game into overtime. Causing a lot of people to miss the Rangers pick.

Texas Rangers- (Game pending)

Conclusion: Today was probably my least confident day finding picks than any day since I started this blog. Tomorrow doesn't look much better aside from 1 pick I like. But I can help you a little. Also a somewhat funny irony, all three of my losses where baseball and all 3 ended 5-4 (Bosten, Angels and Cardinals).

The Picks: I am making a lot of picks today. Just to see how it works and to answer some of your questions. It will probably affect my record negatively a little bit, but I keep getting emails from you on certain matchups...

Pick #1- Vindbjart

I am just going to put this one up. This is a pick I am making this morning after the Cardinals ruined my decent streak. This is definetely a pick you want to make if you are trying to start over on a streak. Vindbjart is a huge favorite (-217 in some books) and even has the draw option. That might be all you need to know but here is a little more. They are 2-3-2 on the road and 4-2-2 at home. Oddly though they score more on the road. Forte is 4-2-1 at home, which is pretty good, however average less home goals than Vindbjart scores in away goals. Also Vindbjart scores more often period. Vindbjart ranks 7th in their league and Forte ranks 10th. Both teams in my opinion are pretty equal. But with the draw option in Vindbjart's favor, they are your best bet.

Pick #2- Dinamo Zagreb

Dinamo has absolutely dominated their league in Croatia, while Malmo is a middling team in the the far better Swedish Allsvenskanliga. I liked this game from the begining, but here is a good comment that kind of swayed my way a little more; "Dinamo Zagreb is a very nice team out of Croatia who is 4-0-0 with a +11 Goal difference. Pretty impressive. They are 3-1-0 in the UEFA Champions League so far with a +5 GD including two straight wins against HJK Helsinki (One home and one away) who is a powerhouse from Finland with a +37 GD in 20 matches played.

Malmö FF hails from the Allsvenskan in Sweden and is 9th in that league with a 7-6-5 record and a -2 GD. They've recently won and drawn against Rangers FC from Scotland who is 3rd in their league which is still just starting up with only 3 matches played. Granted, Sweden is a better soccer country than Croatia but Dinamo's wins were against very good teams better than Malmö FF." Could be close but If you made me choose I would go Dinamo.

Possible Pick #4- Brazil

This will be a short writeup, but Brazil looks like they should be in pretty good in this one. However, with the draw option I would say Mexico pickers may have a pretty fair shot at this. I think the odds would go something like 60/40 for brazil. Brazil is your best pick of the two stats-wise. Brazil is 4-0-1, Mexico is 1-1-1 in their tables. Brazil has scored a total of 12 points and a 12 point goal difference to add to that. Mexico has scored 4 points with a 2 point goal difference. If you cant choose just go Brazil.

Possible Pick #1- Atlanta Braves. No writeup on this game. Sorry just not enough time. Altlanta looks better on paper, but this game you have to choose at your own risk.

Possible Pick #2 Detroit Tigers

Detroit (65-57) will host Minnesota (53-68) tonight as they have looked pretty good at home. Detroit is 34-26 at home and Minnesota is 26-38 on the road. Detroit ranks top 10 in everything for batting (9th in runs, 4th in batting average, 6th on base and 8th in slugging %) vs. the Twins 23rd in runs, 19th in batting average, 28th on base and 26th in slugging %. Now onto pitching; Detroit will bring out Brad Penny tonight who is a pretty poor pitcher for the most part. Upholding a 4.99 ERA, 8-9 record, 55 strikeouts and 1.49 in WHIP.  The good news is the Twins wont start one much better. Carl Pavano will bring his 4.55 ERA, 6-9 record, 69 strikeouts and 1.36 WHIP to the mound. With Detroit being better at home, Minnesota being worse on the road, Detroit having significantly better batting and Pavano and Penny cancelling each other out, I don't see why you wouldn't go with Detroit. Unless you are feeling an upset.

Possible Pick #3 -Texas

Texas has been hot against the Angels for the last couple of days. And that is sorta what bothers me. It almost feels like SM is conditioning us for a Texas downfall. Thats the main reason I am putting this as a possible pick. Both teams will be starting pretty good pitchers. Texas will bring out CJ Wilson (3.28 ERA, 11-5, 153 strikeouts and a 1.23 WHIP) countered by the Angels Ervin Santana (3.10 ERA, 9-8, 143 strikeouts and 1.14 WHIP). Again I think the advantage here is Texas' batting. I think it will slightly outweight the Angels home feild advantage and CJ Wilson will cancel out Santana for the most part. I probably wont add these probable picks games to my record, but it is just some free info on a game you may be interested in.

I wont be back at a computer till 9 or 10 tonight. So this is all I have to finish your day. I am interested to see how all of these matchups end. Good luck tonight

August 16th picks/lookback on day

August 15th pick results:

Vaasan P. Result- Won draw 1-1
I took down this game. But Manchester City- Won 4-0
Atlanta Braves Result- Won 5-4
Texas Rangers Result- Won 8-4

Todays record 4-0 Overall record for the month  21-2

I backed out of the Man City game and missed Texas by 1 minute. In case you were wondering why I didnt pick them in my entry.

Most of tomorrow's picks don't look as good as they have the last few days. I will only have a couple I will put up for now. I may have more in the morning though.

Possible Pick: Atlanta Braves (writeup pending)

Pick #1 St. Louis Cardinals

St. Louis (65-57, 33-30 away) go on the road to face the Pittsburg Pirates (57-63, 27-32 home) tomorrow night. St. Louis' batting way outweights the success of the Pirates batting. St. Louis ranks 4th in runs, 3rd in batting average, 3rd on base and 4th in slugging %. The Pirates rank 27th in runs, 26th in batting average, 26th on base and 28th in slugging. The pitching matchup is about the same. Chris Carpenter will get the start for the cardinals. With his 3.68 ERA, 8-8 record, 132 strikeouts and a 1.34 WHIP, he compares closely with the Pirates Jeff Karstens. Who has a 3.04 ERA, 9-6 record, 80 strikeouts and a 1.14 WHIP. I would definitely say the Pirates have a very slight advantage in tomorrows pitching. But with the Cardinals better batting and better away-home record, I think they take this in a close game.

Pick #2 Texas Rangers

Similar to yesterdays post (look back at batting comparison), the Angels will host Texas yet again. The difference is that both teams will be starting fairly poor pitchers. Texas will bring out Derek Holland. He has a 4.3 ERA, 10-4 record, 111 strikeouts and a 1.41 WHIP. The Angels will start Tyler Chatwood. Who will bring his 4.07 ERA, 6-8 record, 67 strikeouts and a 1.55 WHIP. However, I like Holland slightly better. He (Holland) is more of a strikeout pitcher even with that kind of ERA and is averaging twice as many strikeouts per game than Chatwood. Also he has a better record and slightly lower WHIP.

More in the morning. Good night everyone

August 15th picks/lookback on day (Post is still being updated)

August 14th pick Results:

West Brom W/D/Lose by 1 Result- Won (lost 2-1)
LA Angels Result- Loss 5-4
Texas Rangers Result- Won 7-6
St. Louis Cardinals Result- Won 6-2

Record 3-1 on the day, 17-2 on the month (since August 10th)

Possible Picks (but can't guarantee)

Possible Pick #1 Vaasan P. win, draw, lose by 1

This is a tough one. I wont be guaranteeing this game or Manchester City as much as I can Atlanta or Texas. But here is my best prediction. VPS tied inter turku and JJK who are higher in the league than FC Honka. They were both at home though. However VPS has had a decent away record considering how mediocre (well almost bad really) their team is (1-2-2 in the last 5 away games).  They also played the top team and lost 3-0 on the road while FC Honka only lost by 1. Last year they lost to Honka 3-1 and this year they drew Honka 1-1. Both games were at home. With this game on the road I for sure dont expect them to win. But with some luck I can see them easily drawing or losing by 1. That's only with luck though. It could go either way.

Possible pick #2 Manchester City

Pick # 1- Atlanta Braves

Atlanta (70-51, 35-24 at home) will be hosting the Giants (66-55, 31-30 away) tomorrow night. The Giants batting has been pretty modest all season, yet they have been able to win games due to great pitching. The Giants stats for batting;  29th in runs, 27th batting average, 29th on base, 27th in slug %. Atlanta has been similar to the Giants in some ways. Winning games with modest batting and good pitching. Atlanta stats for batting; 16th in runs, 22nd in batting average, 21st on base and 16th in slugging%. Atlanta will be starting Tim Hudson on the mound tomorrow. Posting a 3.18 ER, 12-7 record, 113 strikeouts and a 1.09 WHIP. The Giants will be starting Madison Bumgarner at pitcher tomorrow. His stats; 3.53 ERA, 7-11 record, 134 strikeouts and 1.25 WHIP. Both pitchers in my opinion are pretty equal. To me what give Atlanta the advantage is their batting and homefeild advantage. Atlanta FTW (more like "For the Green")

Pick #2 Texas Rangers-

Is this really an option? The Angels will start an 0-1 pitcher who posted a 10.80 ERA in his last and only start against New York (Garrett Richards). Also Texas has much better bats at the plate and will be starting Alexi Ogando who posts a 3.22 ERA. All you need to know. Enough said.

Thats all for today. Check back later tonight for my August 16 picks
